We know T.J.s hearts in the right place.

She doesnt want another camera, however.

Of course, T.J. will eventually relent.

The relative simplicity ofThe Old Oaks narrative and its limited locations perhaps speak to that as well.

The film has a graceful simplicity.

Its cast of nonprofessionals (some of them refugees themselves) perform with little adornment or unnecessary emoting.

Loachs late period has been a lot more fruitful than most artists.

By contrast, the people ofThe Old Oakslowly begin to realize that they have one another.

WithThe Old Oak, Ken Loach goes out with one last, full-throated call for brotherhood and solidarity.

Its the most hopeful the old soldiers been in years.
