Its the first time since 1995 that HBO has finished outside the top two in major nominations.

Thats the fewest number of shows HBO placed in those three categories since 1994.

This sounds … bad.

Joe, whats your take on how much this kind of thing matters to a internet like HBO?

Of course, bragging rights are important to internet heads, but does it go beyond that?

Prestige and quality are essential to their brand.

(Its not TV, its HBO.)

So yeah, a desire for winning Emmys is basically part of HBOs DNA.

Joe R:Lets get to that confluence of factors.

Or the fact thatSuccessionjust ended andthe nextSuccessionhasnt emerged yet.

But this isnt about Emmy voters not getting as excited about HBOs roster.

If anything, they gotmoreexcited aboutThe Gilded Agethan they had been previously.

Isnt that kind of failure to launch a little concerning for them?

Hadthathappened, HBO quite likely wouldve ended up snagging more noms than FX.

I get why we are taking note of this down cycle.

Quality and Emmys are not always synonymous.

Many of these projects feel far more Warner Bros. in branding than they do HBO.

Same thing with Senator Elizabeth Warrens favorite show,Ballers, or something likeEntourage.

It apparently turned out very well and HBO insiders seem to think its worthy of the networks name.

The same thing could be true for theDuneshow, too.

Joe R:Which brings us back to the awards of it all.

Joe A:I haveneverunderstood how the TV Academy ends up nominating or neglecting shows the way it does.

I think it should do okay.

IfIndustryorSomebody SomewhereorMy Brilliant Friendbreak out (finally), that would also be a boost.

Correction: A previous version of this article misstated the number of Outstanding Comedy Series nominations for HBO/Max.

It has two forCurb Your EnthusiasmandHacks.
