Best MusicalHells KitchenIllinoiseThe OutsidersSuffsWater for Elephants
The closest race of the night.
Will win:Hells Kitchen
Best Revival of a MusicalCabaret at the Kit Kat ClubGutenberg!
(And Id betGutenbergwishes it were competing as an original musical.)
Also, it has the reviews and the TV star power.
Still, theres an outside chance thatPurlie, which also had a well-timeddebut on PBS, is actually victorious.
His all-in energy sets the show off sprinting (and his name sells so many of its tickets).
I also think it would be fun if a play won in a season with so many so-so musicals.
Now, his frequent collaborator is back with another bite at the apple.
Will win:Jonathan Tunick
Best ChoreographyCamille A.
Kind of locks it down.
Korinss disco redux of the Broadway or Scutts Kit Katification of the August Wilson?
(Or, maybe, they just like flying cars or 90s New York.)
Im guessingSuffs, since in costumes anything near period drama tends to be a winner.
The twunks ofThe Outsidersspend much of the show cloaked in dramatic chiaroscuro and then theres that big stormy rumble.
Will win:Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim
Best Sound Design of a MusicalM.L.
I have no idea how Owen made the acoustics of the Shubert work that well.
Aukin wins off ofStereophonicsmomentum, and also for helping the cast find somany different ways of sitting.
Odom campaigned for and producedPurlie, but Im not sure thats enough to land an upset.
He, at least, has gotten a lot of the recognition in precursor awards shows.
Im going withAppropriate, which ends with an eerily effective sequence of decay.
That may be enough to net it a win.
Will win:Ryan Rumery
