Spoilers ahead forSeveranceseason two, episode nine,The After Hours.
Soon after, she breaks his Innies heart by rejecting his paper-ring marriage proposal.
Its a horrific bind, because if her husband quits, this man ceases to be, Wever says.
He reached out before I had seen the show.
In this instance, I liked the water I was being asked to swim in.
I remember saying, Can you give me an idea of where this will go?
They sent me a two-page document that was This is what you could expect.
We both just showed up and did it.
There was one little rehearsal when I was coming in for a camera test.
But I think we just read it twice, and it felt like we were there with each other.
I like working with him so much.
How did you handle that?Thats what I responded to when they sent me the scenes.
There was so much going on.
It reminded me of what happens sometimes when youre rehearsing a play.
I have to experience every second.
Its simple as that.
Unpack Gretchens costuming for me.
Shes one of the best Ive ever worked with.
OnSeverance, she did a lot of the work for me.
It was wonderful to be shepherded into that world, aesthetically, and the outside-versus-inside world.
I said, No, no, no, Sarah, no notes.
I think in episode four, Dylans first line is talking about the sky.
Hes losing the outside world, the world at large, so lets give him some flowers.
She was on the same page when it came to thoughtful details like that.
I cant imagine how enticing that must be.
I think shes weirdly trying to save her marriage.
In the two previous episodes, wed shot the Innie scenes first and the Outie scenes second.
For episode nine, we shot the Outie scene first and then the Innie scene.
I remember standing there, with Zach on one knee, and thinking it was horrific what had happened.
Shes getting the thing she wants from the man she wants it from, but hes down here.
She finally has it, and she cant keep it.
She doesnt want to look or be looked at.
Im struck by the fact that Innie Dylan and Gretchen can only have so much of a happy ending.
I rememberin episode six, shes very much the one who instigates the kiss.
He said, I dont think hes ever kissed anyone before.
I remember thinking,Shes harming this person.
Whether she knows it or wants to be, theres such a power discrepancy.
Theres something, not in their nature but in their circumstance, childlike about their position.
I was glad that there was a mutual understanding of that.
It means that what happens in episode nine matters.
It foreshadows that this is going to have emotional consequences.
It does often feel like Gretchen speaks to Dylan like hes a child.
Its a very weird line to toe.
It mirrors this paternalistic orientation of the company.
She has put him down on one knee and is going to break his heart and leave.
Theres a lot of things in the water.
If you dont have the humanity to balance the ideas, it doesnt mean anything.
