However, sometimes instead of your friends position, you get a gray screen that says Location Unavailable.

Most likely, the problem is with the unit of the one who allowed them to watch it.
So it is the unit that sends the geolocation that needs fixing, not the one which receives it.

If your Internet connection is fine, try restarting your iPhone.
