If you havent done the MFL before (were on year three!
), its essentially fantasy football but for movies.
You select a roster of eight films that have either already opened or will open in 2024.
Hows that MFL roster coming?
Nate Jones:Hi, Joe!
you could imagine how that worked out for me.
Accordingly, my strategy this year is to have a relatively balanced squad.
So lets dig into that.
.Find Your Spine
.
Ultimately, I want to ride with my guys, andAnoraandThe Brutalistwere two of my favorites from festival season.
(No shade onEmilia Perez; I just havent seen it yet.)
Nate:Youre right that Im taking a risk withoutDuneorGladiator.
If they hit, they hit big the originalGladiatorwon five Oscars, andDune: Part Onetook six.
Im comfortable betting against them, though, for a few reasons.
The second is that theyre competing in the same awards-season lane.
Every craft trophyDunewins is oneGladiatordoesnt and vice versa.
And the third reason is that theyre both really expensive!
In a year like this one, I want as many shots at the top prize as possible.
Upgrading to one of these effects-heavy blockbusters means Id have to downgrade too much elsewhere.
Could I be wrong?
Nate:Welp, lets hope for a theatrical release and a robust box office, then!
Which leads me to my next pick.
Joe:Im glad you mentionedSonicas a creature of pure box office.
The people still love Chris Evans and The Rock.
(Or am I stuck in 2019?)
Otherwise, pack up the sleigh.
Assuming I do keepFig, I have $18 to spend on my final two films.
Best Actress is stacked and Best Actor is looking pretty competitive too.
(Remember howRobot Dreamswas one of the most profitable movies in last years MFL?
Nate:Even though I picked eventual winner20 Days in Mariupollast season, Im nevertheless worried about documentaries.
That branch of the Academy has a penchant for shivving the ostensible front-runner just to prove it can.
So thats my team!
Im feeling good about it now, though Im sure Ill be cursing several of these choices come December.
But how about you; whats keeping you up at night?
But it went and acquiredThe Brutalist, which is currently looking like its new favorite toy.
But I simply cannot bring myself to pick up something no one has seen yet.
